California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires that before an active contractor's license can be issued or renewed, or a previously inactive license made active, the licensee must have a Contractor's Bond, or an approved alternative to the bond on file with the CSLB.

On and after January 1, 2004, SB-1919 requires all classifications of contractors to provide a $10,000 bond. There will no longer be a distinction between swimming pool contractors and other construction contractors.
